(Hypebot) – Just because parts of the industry are shutting down doesn’t mean you have to…
A guest post by James Shotwell of Haulix.
After another wild and unpredictable year, the music industry as a whole is taking a break, and you know what? You should too. You deserve it.
It finally happens. After 12 long months of pandemics, pipeline issues, discovery algorithms and more social media content than anyone cares to imagine, the music industry’s annual downturn is upon us. . For the next three weeks, the best majority of the music industry will be on vacation. As one industry contact put it, “Ask yourself: is this a December issue or is this a January email?”
Hopefully news of the slowdown will bring a sense of relief. But we know that is not the case. You still have things to do! Other people may be taking a break, but you have something to do! Your to-do list is long and you will finish it before the holidays. At least, that’s what you keep telling yourself.
Or maybe you still have to work. My team and I will be working during the holidays, as will many other industry professionals. There will be fewer meetings and fewer emails, sure, but the entertainment wheels will never completely stop. There are always support tickets to answer, databases to update, press releases to prepare, songs to write, and more.
Either way, it’s okay to feel what you feel. The holidays are difficult for everyone, but they are a time of rest for reflection, even if you have to work! Over the next few weeks, there will be things you cannot accomplish. There will be people you can’t reach, contacts you can’t end, and calls that come back. Good! Let these people rest. They deserved it.
Please do what you need to survive and scrape that creative edge, but I must urge you to approach the next three weeks with more focus on the rest. Take time to reflect on the things you’ve accomplished and the things you’re working on right now. You probably can’t believe how much you’ve accomplished in the past 12 months. You have done so much, and there are still so many things to do that will no doubt be amazing, but right now your power is limited. Take that as a sign and rest. Do it in whatever form works best for you, but walk away from work. You deserved it.
