MANILA, Philippines – Free online chat site Omegle is the top most searched query in the Philippines this year, according to tech company Google.
Google’s Annual Year of Search revealed the website that allows users to communicate with each other online, increasing overall search trends in the Philippines in 2019.
“It has become popular as a virtual hangout where people make friends, play fun pranks and even discuss topics of interest or fandoms,” the tech company said in a statement Thursday evening.
“K-pop (Korean pop) fans also got a surprise at Omegle this year as the Blackpink girls showed up in the chat app, making headlines on blogs and social media sites. Some YouTube creators are also using Omegle to develop entertaining feedback content on their channels, ”he added.
Gaming site MemoryHackers ranked second in the most searched queries in the Philippines this year, followed by Codashop, a go-to website for gaming credits and vouchers.
The list is completed with Idol Philippines, Thanos, NBA 2019 Ranking, Halalan 2019, Eddie Garcia, Pacquiao vs Broner and lyrics from Memories.
“The Annual Year of Research serves as a lens for the most relevant topics in pop culture, events, sports, politics and news that have shaped 2019 for Filipinos,” said Marvin Wenke, Head of Communications and of Google Philippines Public Affairs.
“It also gives insight into our way of life and how we conduct research online,” he added.
Halalan 2019 tops hot topics with Google saying it highlights how Filipinos aimed to be more informed citizens this year.
The results of national exams for teachers, civil servants and lawyers also won three places in hot topics for the news.
Other hot topics include earthquakes, the bill on sexual orientation and gender identity expression, the Amazon rainforest, lotto results, meningococcemia and the president’s speech on the state of the nation.
SB19, a pop group formed by a Korean entertainment company, and Jane de Leon, who was selected to play the role of Darna, were the most sought after male and female figures, respectively.
In the top 10 of the most wanted male personalities were the mayor of Pasig, Vico Sotto; actor Gerald Anderson; the mayor of Manila, Isko Moreno; blogger James Charles; Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix; singer and judge of The Voice Philippines Bamboo; Internet celebrity Dante Gulapa; Ion Perez model; and “Buwan” singer Juan Karlos.
Among the biggest female celebrities were actresses Gretchen, Marjorie and Julia Barretto; Ms. Univers Philippines Gazini Ganados; Ms. Universe 2018 Catriona Gray; American singer Billie Eilish; Internet celebrity Jelai Andres; and actresses Brie Larson and Naomi Scott.
