In 2017, singer-songwriter Jenny Owen Youngs set a goal to write a song about each episode of Buffy the vampire slayer. His then-wife Kristin Russo had never watched the show, so the two decided to start a podcast. In regards to watching Buffy, from a newbie’s and longtime fan’s perspective – and each podcast episode would end with an original Youngs line-up based on that episode of the series.
It’s an interesting experience overall – a cool format for generative art, and probably a great way for Youngs to stretch his writing muscles. Not all tunes are bangers, but that doesn’t matter; what matters most is that she will have finally written 144 songs, which is pretty impressive. (For “Once More, With Feeling,” the duo even wrote a full 45-minute musical. In regards to watching the musical episode of Buffy.)
The Complete Collection of Songs from Season six just released, and although I haven’t listened to it all yet, the song “Doublemeat Palace” appeared on my Spotify Release Radar. I’m not sure if this was purposely released as a single, or if it was just the Spotify algorithm doing its job. But I shuddered when I saw the title. “Doublemeat Palace” is universally vilified as one of, if not the, worst episode of Buffy the vampire slayer. But damn… Youngs managed to make a fucking awesome song out of it.
