Jim Murray, Tara Breen & Pádraig Rynne – Cork Folk Festival

Nasc is the new album by Co. musicians Clare Tara Breen and Pádraig Rynne. The duo have performed regularly since 2009 and had always planned to release a duo album. 2020 was the perfect opportunity to enter the studio with longtime collaborators Dónal Lunny and Jim Murray, with Pádraig driving the production. In December 2020, they visited Malbay Studios in Midtown Malbay and spent four days recording. What followed was a nine-track album of mostly Irish traditional music with a dash of Scottish, Asturian and Breton melodies as well as self-composed tracks by Pádraig, Jim and Dónal.

Tara Breen has numerous All Ireland titles on violin and tours regularly with The Chieftains, Stockton’s Wing and as a solo performer. Pádraig Rynne is considered a leading figure in Irish music and is a founding member of well-known groups such as NOTIFY, Atlantic Arc and Guidewires. Jim Murray and Pádraig are longtime friends who first met on the Galway stage when Jim started working with Sharon Shannon.

Described as “one of the coolest sounds in Irish music” by fRoots, Pádraig Rynne is a virtuoso musician, prolific composer and is today considered the best concertina player in Irish music. With a master’s degree in music technology and a passion for experimenting across diverse genres, Pádraig is known for his refreshing explorations of Irish tradition and for his groundbreaking group NOTIFY, described by the New York Echo as “cinematic in scope.”

Worthy description of “musical assistant” by Music Network, Tara Breen is the fiddler of the legendary group The Chieftains. She is an extraordinary musician at all levels with 11 All-Ireland solo titles. Tara is also the winner of the coveted Fiddler of Dooney and Michael Coleman Fiddle competitions and was invited to perform at Dublin Castle for the Queen of England during her state visit to Ireland. Tara has many recording credits to her credit and is regularly invited by artists such as Carlos Nunez, Stockton’s Wing and the Trí Tones.

Jim Murray has traveled the world full time as a professional musician since the age of eighteen. Jim is considered the “right hand” of Sharon Shannon having recorded and toured with her on five continents. He also released two critically acclaimed albums with longtime partner Seamus Begley in 2001 and 2008, which collectively won many prestigious awards such as The Irish Times and Hot Press Traditional Irish Music Album of the Year. Since Jim’s arrival on the world stage, he has earned the respect of national and international musicians and has performed and recorded with artists such as Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earl, Shane McGowan, Altan and Mary Black to never name a few.
